  • History :: 
    • The City of Philadelphia was laid out by William Penn.
      • The original city comprised only the portion of the present city situated between South and Vine Streets and Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers.
    • William Rittenhouse established the first paper mill along the Wissahickon Creek in 1690.
    • 1698 a Quaker meeting House was built on the south west corner of Second and High (Market) Streets. Which was later pulled down in 1755, and another erected, which was only to be demolished in 1808.
    • Philadelphia Library founded )1 July 1731.
    • The first theatrical performance in Philadelphia was on 15 April 1745 and took place in a storehouse located at Water Street, near Vine.
    • The first  Continental Congress gathered in Philadelphia in 1774.
    • The second  Continental Congress gathered in Philadelphia in 1775.
    • 04 July 1776 The Declaration of Independence adopted.
    • Philadelphia the seat of national government from 1776 to 1800 (except for a brief period in 1789 and 1790) until Washington, D.C., became the capital in 1800.
    • 1792 United States Mint established in Philadelphia. The US mint was erected on the east side of Seventh Street just above Sugar Alley (later known as Farmer Street, now called Filbert Street).
    • Philadelphia was the largest city in America from 1800 until 1830.
